Brockville, Ontario was called Elizabethtown. The area was first settled by English speakers in 1785, when Americans who had remained loyal to the crown fled to Canada after the American Revolution.

Hebron, Connecticut was incorporated in 1708 in Hartford County. It became part of Windham County in 1726 and part of Tolland County in 1785.
On June 30, 1812, Rhoda Root petitioned for the 200 acres of land she was entitled to as the wife of Daniel Root and the daughter of Samuel Pennock of Elizabethtown.

The first European settlements in Ontario were after the American Revolution when 5,000 loyalists left the new United States.
Grenadier Island is in the St. Lawrence River in Leeds County, Ontario. United Empire Loyalists settled on the island in the early 19th century. During the War of 1812, there was a watch post. By 1818, twelve farms had been established.
Abel Root was born on August 29, 1791 in Strafford, Orange County, Vermont. He was the son of Daniel Root.
He married Jemima Fish. Jemima was born about 1798.
Jemima and Abel's children included:
Lorana Root Burtch (1828, married William Burtch) and
Albert Root (1837).

Jemima died in 1878.
William Root was born about 1811.
He married Camilla Holmes. Camilla was born about 1821.

Mary Ann Root (1845), and
Catherine Root (1856).

While the friends of Richard Holmes attended his funeral on Sunday, his son-in-law, Wm Root, aged 82 years died at the residence of John Mackie, Lake Eloida. His wife had been dead for several years. Mr. Root's home was at Curry's Mills above Westport, but he came down to spend the sinter with his son-in-law, Mr. Mackie.
